Purpose: A practical tool to meet the child’s need for control in a constructive way.
-
The Need for Control: Between ages 2 and 6, the child is developing their sense of self and will (“No!”). Tantrums arise when this will is repressed.
-
Strategy: Limited Choice channels the child’s need for control toward options that are acceptable to the adult. Never give an option you aren’t willing to accept.
-
Strategic Application:
-
Rule: Always offer only two acceptable options.
-
When to Use It: On the how or the where, never the if of the action.
-
Mistaken Example: “Do you want to put on your coat?” (Easy answer: NO).
-
Correct Example: “It’s time to go (YES). Do you want to put your coat on by yourself or do you want me to help with the zipper?”
