Purpose: To provide tools so independence is achievable.
-
The “Baby Steps” Principle: A big task (e.g., “Get Dressed”) is overwhelming. Breaking it into 2-3 simple, visual steps (pictograms, list) ensures the child has micro-successes.
-
Example: Getting Dressed = 1. Pants. 2. Socks. 3. Shirt.

-
Positive Reinforcement (Praising Effort): Never praise identity (“You’re such a good boy”). Praise the process and the effort.
-
Ineffective Praise: “You did great, you’re the best!” (Dependency on approval).
-
Effective Praise: “Look how you kept trying with that zipper! You put in so much effort! That was very persistent of you.” (Fosters self-confidence and resilience).
